CTBUH Meeting: Vietnam

On June 27, 2011, a seminar on tall buildings sponsored by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) was held in Hanoi, Vietnam. The event was initiated by CTBUH Chairman Prof. Sang Dae Kim and attended by over 120 participants.

Prof. Sang Dae Kim presented at the seminar on two topics, “Tall Building Structural Systems” and “An Introduction to CTBUH.” In addition, two additional speakers also presented at the seminar. The presenters included Dr. Chung Kwang Rang, President of DongYang Structural Engineers Co. Ltd. (Korea), and Dr. Jong Soo Kim, CEO of CS Structural Engineering Inc. (Korea).

Dr. Chung’s presentation, “The Design and Construction of the Outrigger Structure on Tall Buildings” reviewed basic concepts of utilizing outriggers, a common method of strengthening tall buildings by connecting the inner core to the outer perimeter columns, providing extra stability which is a method that is very effective, and favored by many structural engineers. Dr. Jong Soo Kim followed with a presentation on, “The Progress of Technology of Tall Building Related Wind Engineering” which updated recent developments in wind engineering research. Dr. Phan Quang Minh (Vietnam) concluded the seminar by thanking everyone involved for a very productive event and he also graciously extended his appreciation to the CTBUH representatives who presented, especially Prof. Sang Dae Kim, who made a considerable effort to organize and deliver the first of perhaps many seminars of the CTBUH in Vietnam. The seminar was an overall success with many people commenting positively on the valuable information they received at the event.
