Another successful Qatar Meeting
In the past year, CTBUH Qatar has become a prime example of how a thriving local professional network on tall buildings and the urban habitat can be built up almost from scratch. By organizing regular meetings where relevant topics and projects are discussed and presented, the Qatari chapter has successfully created a solid professional base for continued tall building related activities in the Gulf nation.
The latest meeting of the CTBUH Qatar Chapter, the third in 2010, was organized on November 30th and featured the Musheireb project which, though not tall, presents a unique reorganization of urban density in a Middle Eastern context. The project, which was formerly known as the Heart of Doha, is a 35-hectare and US$5.5 billion inner city development next to the famous Souq Waqif. The area is well-known as a location where Qatar’s traditional architecture and urban planning are combined with modern design principles in a sustainable living environment.
The event was sponsored by Musheireb and project developer Dohaland. Held at Dohaland’s Knowledge Enrichment Centre located at the end of the Corniche in the West Bay area, over 60 professionals attended the meeting. As an introduction to the event, the staff of the Knowledge Enrichment Centre gave guided tours through the facility. The Knowledge Enrichment Centre was created by Dohaland to give the public the opportunity to learn about Qatari heritage through a series of exhibits which lead visitors through the past, present and future of Qatar.
CTBUH’ Qatar Country Representative Bill Maibusch opened the meeting with a welcome, after which he introduced the CTBUH Chairman Dr. Sang Dae Kim. Dr. Kim briefly discussed the mission of the Council, and informed them about the many services and resources the CTBUH provides to the professional community.

The keynote speaker for the evening was the Director of Development with Dohaland John Rose. Mr Rose presented a short film in which Her Highness Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser Al Missned spoke about Dohaland’s Musheireb project and its importance to bridge the gap between the past and the present history of Doha. Mr Rose also presented more specific information about Musheireb, including its master plan, design and construction phasing, and images of the final development, which is targeted for completion in 2016.

After the Q&A, the meeting concluded with refreshments on the outdoor deck of the Knowledge Enrichment Centre, giving attendees sweeping views of Doha’s growing skyline. This was an excellent opportunity for professional networking in a relaxed setting.
The next CTBUH Qatar regional meeting is planned for March, 2011. Previous meetings were held on May 31 and September 27 of 2010.
