Mr. Johnson will continue to build on Professor Kim’s initiative to extend the Council’s presence in Asia and to revitalize its academic programs and activities. He will also focus research initiatives on creating higher performing buildings to meet environmental, health, and financial measures. Professor Kim will continue to serve the Council as Vice-Chair of the CTBUH Board of Trustees.

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) is the world’s leading body in the field of tall buildings, recognized as the authoritative source of information on tall buildings internationally. It is the arbiter of tall building height and the determiner of the title of “World’s Tallest Building.”

Mr. Johnson was appointed as a member of CTBUH’s Board of Trustees in 2009. Before that, he was chair of the CTBUH Awards Committee, a member of the Advisory Group and Editorial Board of the CTBUH Journal.

As the first architect chosen to lead the Council, Mr. Johnson brings a new perspective to the Chairmanship. Commenting on his appointment at the CTBUH 2011 World Conference in Seoul, Korea, Timothy Johnson said: "The CTBUH plays a key role in building a robust framework for the development of tall buildings worldwide. As we enter a new and important phase of development, it is vital that we gear our decisions toward environmental stewardship, resource stewardship and the making of well-planned urban communities. I am looking forward to leading CTBUH at this challenging yet promising time."

CTBUH Executive Director, Antony Wood, said: "Tim Johnson’s appointment coincides with a very exciting period for the CTBUH and tall buildings in general. 2011 will see more buildings completed over 200 meters than ever before, with over 78 buildings set to open by the end of the year. Additionally, at the end of 2001, 71 years after the completion of the world’s first supertall (building 300 meters or more in height), there were a total of 25 such buildings existing internationally. A mere ten years later, that number has more than doubled: there are now 55 supertalls existing around the world, with an additional 24 buildings set to open in the next two years. The need to continue and enhance the dialogue about the role tall buildings play in societies is thus more critical than ever before. Tim’s expertise in architecture and sustainable design will be crucial in helping us meet our goals.”

Timothy Johnson is a Partner at the global architecture and design firm NBBJ. He recently oversaw the design of Singapore’s tallest residential high-rise, The Sail at Marina Bay, which earned Singapore’s Gold standard of sustainability. He recently managed the design of Eton Properties’ Dalian Center, which is the tallest building under construction in northeast China. He leads the firm’s commercial design efforts and serves on NBBJ’s Board of Directors overseeing the firm’s international steering committee. Prior to joining NBBJ, Mr. Johnson was a senior designer at Ellerbe Becket.
